12 Scouts, their parents and friends came together to help clean up Audubon Park's new addition for Commonwealth Cleanup Week on Saturday, March 31st. The boys treated it like a treasure hunt, looking to see what cool things they could find hidden in the woods and grass. We found mussel shells (a long way from the lake!), a deer skull, old bottles and toys, and even an 8-track tape! It was hard work, but everyone had a lot of fun. At the end of the day, we had collected a whopping 59 bags of trash and lots of loose material, weighing 880 pounds in all! That goes to show everyone what Scouts can accomplish when they set their minds to it.
Here are a couple of quick photos of the morning crew taking a much-needed break in front of the fruit of their labors:
Left to right are Sean W., Sam G., Carter P., and Carter C. The afternoon crew even made it on the evening news! Working in the afternoon session were Joe G., Chris G. , Will H., Jack H., Will M., Dustin C., Kaleb C., Sammy H. and Sammy's friend Nathan.
Thanks to the boys and their parents for all their hard work!
Greenwing Day fun!
Saturday, 10 February 2007
Everyone had fun at Greenwing Day at the Sloughs WMA. There was a huge crowd, but every kid got to hold a mallard duck for banding and then let it fly away to join its friends! We also saw a demonstration of a net cannon, the device that the wildlife managers use to capture ducks and geese for banding. With the kids' help, managers will now be able to keep track of these ducks, where they migrate, and how many there are in different areas.
Every child was entered into a drawing, and they had a chance to win a ring toss and "guess how many feathers" game. Prizes included Greenwing hats, camp chair, a backpack and a safety kit. Anna Mayo, sister of Wolf Scout Jack Mayo, was the big winner from our group, taking home a pocket knife in the ring toss and just barely losing a BB gun in a three-way tie on the feather guess. Of course, all attending Scouts will receive a segment patch for the occasion!
It happens every February, so if you missed out this time we hope you can make it next year!
